Arguably, we live in the most divisive times in political history. Our nation is sharply divided by red and blue. Demonstrations and protests are a daily occurrence, and the sentiment toward our current president is unprecedented. There has never been a president so loved, yet so hated at the same time.
Regardless of how you feel about Trump politically or personally, God commands us to pray for him. I Timothy 2:1-2 says, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. Who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”
The command here is clear—that we are to pray for our leaders. Godliness does not determine if someone is worthy of our prayers. Whether our leaders are godly or not, we are to lift them up to the Lord. When voting for the president, it is important for Christians to remember that we aren’t electing a prophet. We aren’t electing a moral compass, and we aren’t electing a pastor. We are electing the person we think will most closely align our nation to the will of God. And then we must pray.
Our nation needs prayer, forgiveness, and mercy.
Heavenly Father,
Your Word tells us in I Timothy 2:1–2 to offer prayers and intercession for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness. Today, I lift up President Trump before You.
Lord, Your Word says in Proverbs 21:1 that the king’s heart is in Your hand, and You turn it wherever You will. I ask that You work deeply in his heart. Shape his thoughts, guide his decisions, and soften anything that does not align with Your purposes. Give him wisdom beyond his own understanding, discernment in moments of pressure, and humility to seek counsel that is righteous and true.
Father, let Your will be done in and through him, just as Jesus taught us to pray in Matthew 6:10— “Your kingdom come; Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” If there are voices around him that are not from You, quiet them. If there are paths before him that do not lead to justice, redirect him. Establish what is good, restrain what is harmful, and bring about what accomplishes Your greater plan.
Surround him with wise advisors. Protect him and his family. Grant him clarity of mind, steadiness of spirit, and a heart that is responsive to Your leading. Above all, glorify Yourself through the leadership of this nation.
We trust that You are sovereign over all authorities, as Daniel 2:21 reminds us, You raise up leaders and You remove them. May everything done be under Your hand and for Your purposes.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
